Illingworth Ingham (M/cr) Ltd is a leading supplier of Keruing in the UK.
Truck flooring, heavy goods vehicles, pier decking, exterior window cills, structural blockwork, road and street bollards, heavy duty industrial flooring. It is generally chosen for this type of use due to its load bearing strength, its hardness, its durability and its relatively low cost.
Colour – Sapwood is greyish-brown and distinct. The heartwood varies from light red to reddish-brown or brown, darkening on exposure.
Grain – reasonably straight with occasional interlocking.
Texture – Moderately coarse but even.
Strength – Keruing generally compares with teak in most strength categories, but it is a little stiffer, and about 40 per cent more resistant to shock load.
Weight – High – about 720 kg/m³. Density can vary by 20% or more.
Ease Of Drying – dries slowly. Difficult to achieve uniform drying particularly in thick stock. High temperatures aggravates the release of resin so care is needed to reduce this to a minimum and also to reduce the tendency for cupping to occur. There is a high shrinkage during drying and a corresponding high movement potential.
Movement In Service – Medium
Preservative Treatment – Difficult
Keruing can be difficult to work with without the correct cutters/tooling.
Nailing – Reasonable
Screwing – Reasonable
Gluing – Variable
Varnishing and Polishing – Requires a lot of care due to resin
Staining – Satisfactory
